Here’s my interview with Cynthia Payne, a homeowner’s insurance expert.
We’re back with another topic that’ll hopefully help you as a homeowner, whether you’re looking to sell or just want some good information for the future. I’m joined today by Cynthia Payne with Liberty Mutual. She’s a 31-year veteran of the home insurance field, and she’s agreed to talk a little bit about homeowners insurance and what you should be looking for:
“Thanks for having me, Jeff. The most important thing I would tell you about home insurance is that it’s not something you should look for the best deal with. Your home is your biggest asset, so it’s important to know what you need to look for.
“You want a local agent, someone who knows the difference between a house in DeWitt and a house in Syracuse. What coverage those homes might need is different. I’ve grown up here; I know the houses here. A lot of times, Jeff can simply mention the street and the closing date, and I know exactly what house he’s talking about. Not to mention, through Jeff, you’ll have my maximum discount applied, which is a great way to start the process.
“What I find with buyers, especially first-time buyers, is that homeowners insurance is almost an afterthought. They have a certain amount of days before closing that they need to buy it within, so they often just ask what company their friends and family use. I don’t think they often know what to look for in a company.”
Let’s say you already have homeowner’s insurance; how often should you do a checkup on your coverage?
“You should check your total insurance package every three years. Credit is the No. 1 criteria for most policies today. If it swings 50 points higher, it can give you as high as a 20% reduction on not only your homeowner’s insurance but auto and life policies as well.
“There are a lot of things you can learn in a five to 10 minute conversation with me that will help you protect your biggest asset: your home. I’ve seen it all over 30 years, and the most important thing to me is making sure you have the best coverage at the best price.”
